Common accessibility questions

Creating websites that are accessible to everyone is a complicated subject, with a lot of conflicting information out there. These FAQs explain the laws around accessibility and what is involved in creating an accessible website.

Does my business need to be accessible?

It is a legal requirement in the UK for your website to be accessible to everyone if you are a charity, local authority, school or not-for-profit.

Regular businesses can be sued if their website is inaccessible by users with special accessibility needs.

Websites must meet the WCAG 2.1 AA standard in the UK as a minimum requirement.

Why do you only test to WCAG 2.1 AA pass criteria?

We test against WCAG 2.1 AA because this is the legal requirement in the UK for accessibility on the majority of websites. We want your website to work towards being accessible within the regulation first.

If you meet WCAG 2.1 AA with a PASS we can discuss aiming for the AAA standard and creating a more in-depth report.

What tools do you use to check for accessibility?

We have a team of accessibility experts with a lot of experience and knowledge. Our team know how to test website for accessibility and how to advise on ways to fix issues.

We do use some testing tools like AXE and Lighthouse to aid in our website testing but these tools alone are not enough.

How long do accessibility audits take?

We work with you to deliver your accessibility report in a timeframe that meets your business needs. Typically we deliver your report within 7 working days but this can be expedited if needed.

Can I add optional add-ons after purchase?

Our standard website accessibility review is enough for 99% of websites but sometimes you need extra pages, ongoing reviews and other documents – so we offer those extras as optional add-ons.

Do you offer a charity discount?

Our standard charity discount is 20% on the standard accessibility audit and report service. Discounts are agreed and refunded after purchase and only charities that share our values will qualify.

How do I fix the issues you find in my accessibility audit?

We make recommendations in our reports on how to fix accessibility issues. These notes are for your technical team or website administrators to action. In some cases anyone with access to the website content management system (CMS) can make the changes too.

If you’re unable to fix issues we find we can discuss additional services we can offer to help.

If you can’t find the answer to your question please get in touch to discuss how we can help make your website more accessible.
